Strong, Soft, and Still High Performing

Strong, Soft, and Still High Performing

Hi Reader

Some women are built for momentum.
They have a big engine, a big capacity, and a strong work ethic that does not switch off.

Caroline Mason is one of those women.

She grew up in the countryside, farming runs through her DNA, and so does drive. She was surrounded by entrepreneurial energy, strong women, hard work, and ambition. And she carried that into a life that has always involved movement.

Netball, hockey, athletics, dance, rugby at university, then competitive rowing for 11 years. Add in endurance challenges like the Longmynd Hike in Shropshire, 52 miles, eight summits, over 10,000 feet of climbing, completed in 14 and a half hours. Then she came back the following year and knocked more than two hours off her time.

This is what she does. She trains, she commits, she delivers.

But the real story, and the reason this conversation matters, is what happens when high capacity turns into over functioning.

Caroline spoke openly about painful periods, choosing the coil because it felt easier, then reaching a point where she wanted to reconnect with her cycle, not just for health, but for fertility. She wanted children, and she realised she did not actually understand her own body well enough to support that goal.

When we started working together, the biggest challenge was not her physical ability. It was her mindset.

Caroline can push beyond the brick wall. She can override her body’s signals. She can keep going through pain.

So when the plan required slowing down, decluttering her schedule, and using lower intensity movement during her nurturing phase, it felt like a psychological battle. Yoga, stretching, slower training, fewer commitments. Her brain resisted it. It took time.

But the shift was powerful.

Because when you stop measuring success by how much you can tolerate, and start measuring it by how well you can listen, your body becomes an ally again.

Caroline’s non-negotiable is fertility. That goal shaped everything. Sleep, food, stress, training intensity, toxins, who she spends time with. She changed skincare and hair products, reduced plastics where possible, leaned into anti inflammatory foods and gut health, and started investing her money in what supports her health first.

Not because it is trendy.

Because it is aligned.

And what I loved most is how practical she is about joy.

Fun is not a big event. It is dancing with earbuds in for one song.
A walk at lunchtime with no phone.
Sunshine on your face.
Birdsong.
Small daily moments that bring you back to yourself.

Caroline also shared a simple snapshot of her day, taking temperature on waking to track ovulation, a mirror pep talk, early morning horse care, then work, then a lunchtime Barre Definition session for balance and small muscle work, then evenings that might include pole dancing, riding, gym, circuits, or Hyrox.

She is still active. She is still high performing.

But she is no longer doing it at war with her body.

If you recognise yourself in the over functioning pattern, here is the simplest takeaway from Caroline.

Learn your body. Listen to your body. Do not squash the sensations.

That is your system trying to communicate.

And when you notice yourself cramming everything in, doing more when you feel anxious, or trying to please everyone, pause and come back to basics.

Sleep. Food. Nervous system. Cycle phase. Self love.

One breath can be the start of a different day.

What actually happens when you come to me Hi Reader The doorbell rings. I've already prepared. Timed things. Protected my energy. Because what's about to come through that door is often carrying a lot of weight. She arrives warm. Wanting to be held. We walk through the garden into the studio. She puts her things down. And almost immediately her eyes go to the mat.The mat is where she unravels. She lies down and takes a big sigh. And then she tells me exactly what's going on in her body. Not...

The area you've been managing around Hi Reader There is a part of the body that most active women have learned to manage around rather than through. The pelvic floor. Not ignored exactly — but not listened to either. Adjusted for, accommodated, quietly negotiated with every time they head to the gym or the track or the studio. I spoke recently with Vicki Causer, a women's health coach who specialises in pelvic health and movement. What struck me most in our conversation was not the clinical...

TThe Door I Kept Closing Hi Reader There is a particular kind of exhaustion that does not show up in your training data. Not the kind that comes from a hard session or a short night. The kind that lives underneath everything. The kind that makes you wonder why you are doing all the right things and still feel like you are operating at about seventy percent. I know that feeling from the inside. And I see it in almost every woman who walks through my studio door. She is already doing a lot. She...
