What actually happens when you come to me

The doorbell rings.


I've already prepared. Timed things. Protected my energy. Because what's about to come through that door is often carrying a lot of weight.

She arrives warm. Wanting to be held. We walk through the garden into the studio. She puts her things down. And almost immediately her eyes go to the mat.

The mat is where she unravels.

She lies down and takes a big sigh. And then she tells me exactly what's going on in her body. Not vaguely — precisely. She knows every sensation. Where she's holding her breath. Where the pain and tightness is. What the restriction feels like. What it's stopping her from doing.

Then she tells me about the week. How she's blown up, or held everything together by a thread. How she's been running at full capacity and she really, really needs this.

So we start.

Sometimes she's so overwhelmed and drained that I take hold of her body for her. She lies on her back. I place my hands on her knees and begin to move them — slowly, left to right. Opening the hips. You feel where she's stuck. Where her breath catches. Where she tightens and protects.

I move down to her feet. Circular movements at the ankle. Flexing, extending. Pressure up the leg, all the way from the foot to the hip. And when I reach the pelvis — that's where it lives. The holding. All of it.

I rest my hands there.

I can feel her pulse beneath my palms. And I feel the grip. And I wait for it to loosen.

Then I move to her belly and ask her to breathe into my hands. Her ribcage expands laterally. Her breath deepens. I rock her — knee over to the opposite side, one hand on her shoulder, one on her knee — and I rock until she really lets go.

I go behind her head. I place my hands on her chest and take the shallow breath away. I hold her head. I move it left and right. I create space between her neck and her shoulder — all that tightness in the trapezius that's been gripping for days.

And then I just stay. I hold her head. I place it gently on the floor. I stay with her in the space we've created together.

The temple of womanhood.

When she opens her eyes, she comes up slowly. She sits. She looks different.

And then we move.

We start to open and expand. We add weight — a light barbell, some dumbbells. We open the chest. We work into the glutes, where so much tension has been living. And then she's ready.

She lifts.

40, 50, 60 kilos off the floor. And you can see what it does to her. Her eyes sparkle. Her chest fills. Everything activates. Her brain is present. Her body is present. She is doing more than she thought she was capable of.

Then we move into power — kettlebell swings, jumps, push-ups. Ten minutes of that and she is buzzing.

And then we bring her back down. Legs up the wall. Deep stretching. I help her release the hips, the glutes, the hamstrings. Everything we worked, we restore.

She leaves different from how she arrived.

This is what working with me looks like.
